Small Cells

Bringing broadband inside. Smartphones, tablets and connected devices have created an unprecedented demand for mobile broadband. Technologies such as LTE have been widely deployed to meet this demand, but they must continue to co-exist with legacy technologies like 3G for some time. Innovations such as Heterogeneous Networks (HetNets), which use base stations of varying form factors including small cells, pico cells, micro cells and macro cells, are being extensively leveraged to optimize capacity and coverage.

Small cells can optimize coverage and capacity, enhance the user experience and also provide an alternate path for offloading data from congested operator networks. With their proximity to the user, small footprint and ability to use the subscriber’s Internet (cable/DSL to backhaul traffic) for data offloading, small cells are proving to be a very cost-effective means of providing mobile broadband coverage in homes, malls and offices. The emergence of multi-mode small cells supporting multiple standards, such as 3G and LTE, will ensure that they continue to play a critical role across heterogeneous networks.

Small Cell Software Framework and Protocol Stack

We offer a comprehensive suite of standards-compliant software frameworks and protocol stacks to help Communication Equipment Providers (CEPs) rapidly develop Small Cell Access Points and gateways. These femtocell software frameworks have been pre-optimized on leading hardware platforms to help reduce complexity and risk.

This software framework provides a complete set of building blocks to develop standalone solutions for both 3G and LTE technologies, or dual-mode solutions that support both 3G and 4G simultaneously. Our LTE 3G and dual mode software has been licensed by many CEPs and has been deployed in several networks around the world.

The key highlights of our small cell software framework include:

  • Support for building small cells of multiple form factors
  • Protocol stacks for 3G and LTE layer 2 and layer 3 that have been optimized on various hardware platforms
  • Comprehensive user equipment and cell call functionality
  • Exposure for standard Femto Application Platform Interfaces (FAPI), as well as integration and testing with leading layer 1 PHY vendors

Client Benefits

Flexible architecture provides unmatched scalability

A flexible and modular architecture ensures high scalability. Our small cells software can support solutions ranging from single-core to multi-core architecture based on the number of subscribers required to be supported.

Support for multiple technologies provides substantial cost savings

Our software is capable of supporting both LTE and WCDMA simultaneously. This translates into major cost savings for both operators and subscribers as it eliminates the need for deploying standalone solutions.

Interoperability across multiple networks

Sysmetlab offers support for all 3GPP-defined interfaces, including the Iuh interface—ensuring interoperability and seamless performance.

SON features provides rapid automation

Incorporates advanced Self Organizing Network (SON) features that help automate network configuration, deployment and operations—reducing the cost and complexity of maintaining a network.

Advanced RRM provides best-in-class quality of service (QoS)

Includes support for advanced Radio Resource Management (RRM) features that enable operators to deliver the highest quality of service (QoS).
